Watch how to draw a dahlia flower in this real time video!!
I'll show you the entire drawing process from start to finish, creating a detailed botanical drawing using pencil on paper. this illustration is easy to follow and great for anyone wanting to learn how to draw flowers!
This is a 5x7 drawing in real time and takes about 37 minutes to complete. I used a mechanical pencil, HB & 8H pencils for this drawing as well as a bending stump and an eraser to pick out highlights. I included my source photo for this quick drawing so you could see what I'm drawing from.
My goal was to capture the feeling of this flower not to make a photo-realistic reproduction. This type of drawing style is great for plein air or when you just want to capture something without taking a long time but still have a lovely piece at the end. I like to concentrate on mark-making as I like seeing the evidence of the art creation process. When drawing, I always feel free to add or subtract things from the source in order to make a more interesting artwork as this drawing is for purely artistic decorative purposes.
If you have any questions about my process or materials be sure to ask CONTACT! Enjoy the journey as I create this sweet little drawing, and I hope you learn something new about making art and how to draw flowers!!!
