See How I Created this Colorful Country Road Fall Painting, Start to Finish!

The imagery in this painting is from my imagination, based on years of observation. This is a large painting that I created for a collector here in Canada. My intention isn't to show you how to copy it, but to show how a painting comes to life from start to finish. Folks who collect art rarely get to see the process behind the art that hangs on their wall, so this is a sneak peek into my studio. This painting was created using acrylic paint on stretched canvas. I start with an orange base as it makes the colors I put on top brighter, plus any gaps between strokes will show orange instead of white.
This is how I usually start all my acrylic paintings. For a large painting of this size, I plan it out in a drawing first, and then draw it on the canvas. I outline over the pencil in black paint, and then I roughly block in the colors to see how they work together. Once I feel like I have a handle on the colours,
I begin to add shading and highlights to bring the elements of the painting to life. I work the whole canvas at the same time since changes I make in one part will affect other parts. Even though I have a good idea of where the painting is headed as I create it you'll notice some changes do happen through the process as I add or subtract elements of change colors.
