'Plein Air Painting in Port'

This series of paintings is a continuation of a series that I did in 2023 where I explored and painting the interesting views around Port Stanley.

Capturing these views directly in situ seemed like a wonderful way to share my impressions of these stunning scenes so that you could enjoy them too!

  • First painting with my new little watercolour palette. I got this to go with my small sketchbook and water filled brush to have something super portable. The goal is to easily make some quick sketches.

  • Here is the next step. Again with the view on the deck towards the creek and boat launch. I use this view to experiment. This is a larger version of watercolor with pen and mixed media.

  • I made a diy plein air box set up that I wanted to test, so once again the view from my deck is a nice way to start. Here is a sketch of the view both in my little book and then on my prepared panel. I've painted this view many times over the years.

  • This is the finished painting! I'm also going to be posting a video of the painting process on my You Tube channel, which is very cute since you can see all that's happening in the background with people and critters coming and going.

Have you always wanted to capture what you see when you're outdoors enjoying the view?

Photos are great, but sketching & painting the beauty you see is a far more engaging, fun, and challenging way to experience the world around you. Find out more....

  • This is another deck view painting facing the other direction. I've never painted this side before as it's mostly trees and a gravel laneway. I started with a little sketch in the book to the right and then sketched it out larger on the orange panel same as the last painting.

  • Here is the completed painting. I did have a glass of wine on the go ... my hubby was out at the sailing club so I decided to have a llttle private painting party with myself lol. I love how this painting turned out. It did take about three hours, but I was chatting with neighbours for part of the time.

  • For this painting I headed down the road to Lions Landing Marina here in Port. I settled on this view since I liked the trees and the boats. Here is the initial sketch. I didn't do a mini sketch for this one. This painting had a rough spot during the middle where I got a bit lost. I'd been recording a video of the creation but then some folks came to talk to me and I forgot to turn it back on for a bit.

  • I recovered from my initial muddle and here is the completed painting! I love how it turned out, just having that band of boats across the bottom and then the rest all trees. It's a composition that I've been using a lot lately with boat paintings. I enjoy the contrast between all the organic shapes and the man made boat shapes.

  • I headed to Pump House beach for this painting. I remembered this tree from a previous walk. It was a windy day so things looked very exciting with all the motion, lots of chop to the water. Surprisingly there was nobody at the beach the whole time I was painting... which ended being a couple hours. I did a little ad-libbing on the sky to add some interest since there wasn't much for clouds. I do love my made up version, it's a bit more dynamic.

  • This was a pretty sweet setup in the shade of the trees on main beach. I had painted this view as plein air a couple years ago, so I was super excited to get back into this one!

This location was next to a playground so there were lots of disruptions as kids ran in and out of my view and for some reason there was lots of screaming lol (not by me)

  • I love how this one turned out! This tree has such great shapes!!! This piece took a few hours, and I overheard one of the kids say, "that girl has been painting a long time"... 'girl', bless his heart.

  • This was a storm day, and quite windy! I'd painted this view before a couple years ago and it was storm then... hmmmm. Is the storm bringing me or I am I bringing the storm? lol. It was a fairly quiet day at the beach but a group of ladies did come and sit in front of me, I think they didn't even know I was there.

  • This one turned out great! I love the trees on the right and I did a stylized version of them. The clouds were moving pretty fast in the wind so I could only paint my impression of them. Part way through the painting a very lovely but quite man came up behind me to say he liked the painting, I screamed since I was deep in focus and didn't know he was there... poor man I think I startled him as much as he startled me.

  • Starting a painting of the view off the deck towards the marina. I know this view well so it's perfect for experimenting with.

  • I stylized the view and simplified the elements. I also played with creating more depth going into the distance.

  • This is another view of the creek that runs by the condos where I live. I started with a sketch to get a sense of what I wanted to capture. the geese were interested in what I was doing lol.

  • I switched to acrylic on panel for this piece of the view.. I played up the colors. The tree in the distance has a red tint so I made it bolder in the painting. You can't see in the photo but there were some intense clouds that day.

  • Painting at the Moore Water Garden here in Port Stanley. I spent a couple sessions painting with the London Gallery Painting Group and ended up with two paintings

  • This painting was an old window with a flower box full of lovely hot pink flowers. It was a super hot day when the sun was out but it made lovely shadows.

  • This was a painting I did of water lilies, so many colors to work from, love the vivid fuscia next to the bright green and verigated lily pads. They also had lots of fish but they didn't make it into the painting.

  • When painting with the group they close each session with a roundup of everything we all created. I normally paint alone so it was so lovely painting with all these talented ladies.
