Watch how to draw this lovely botanical aster drawing from start to finish!
In this video I'll show you the real time process sketch of this beautiful white aster using a pencil on paper. The video has time stamps and prompts so you can follow along, and is great for anyone wanting to learn how to sketch!
This simple drawing concentrates on line, mark-making, and the use of negative space for a unique sketch. This is a 5x7 drawing that takes approx. 37 minutes. I used a HB/6B/8B pencils, a blending stump and an eraser. I included my source photo for this quick drawing so you could see what I'm working from.
I captured this photo of a wild white aster while out for a walk. My goal with this sketch was to capture the feeling of this flower, not to make a photo-realistic reproduction. This type of drawing style is great for plein air or when you just want to capture something without taking a long time but still have a lovely piece at the end. I really enjoy concentrating on mark-making as I like seeing the evidence of the art creation process. When drawing or sketching, I always feel free to add or subtract things and alter shapes and lines to make a more interesting artwork. You can smooth the pencil marks out or not, depending on how 'sketchy' you want to keep the piece.
If you have any questions about my process or materials, be sure to ask! Enjoy the journey as I create this sweet little drawing, and I hope you learn something new about making art and how to draw from your garden!!!
Cheers, Cathy : )
