I have a standard set of colors that I use and then add to them as the painting develops. I try to stick to about 12 colors from the tube and then mix them to get the exact shade I want.
Mixing colors is the most basic skill of painting. In art school we spent whole days just mixing colors to exactly match objects, it was tedious but challenging and very useful in the long run.
