Acrylic Painting Time Lapse | How to Paint a Colorful Sunset Tree
Watch how to paint a mini sunset tree in acrylic. I'm sharing the painting process using acrylic paint on paper from start to finish!
This video is a time lapse painting of one of my original little landscape artworks... a small tree silhouetted with a sunset that features lots of color and contrasting brushstrokes. This artwork is a 4"x6" created using acrylic paint on paper. It's a nice size to experiment with and watercolor paper is a cheap way to quickly get your idea into paint... like a quick sketch painting.
I didn't have a preconceived notion of how this painting would turn out when I started. As I added paint I liked how the marks of contrasting light and dark color added a lot of visual interest and gave the sense of distant clouds catching the light. Close to the end when adding black outlines I also added a bunch of smaller branches. The refined detail of the lines contrasted nicely with the other bolder marks. That's the joy of discovery when you're painting, as you lay down the paint you react in the moment to what went before continually adjusting to add more of what's working. The whole painting took around 2 hours real time.
My palette for this piece is the same as many of my other paintings...(Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Orange, Red Oxide, Light Green Permanent, Brilliant Yellow Green, Dioxazine Purple, Phthalocyanine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber, White and Black).
If you have any questions about my process or materials be sure to ask in the comments!
Enjoy watching the journey as I create this sweet colorful sunset painting, and I hope you learn something new about making art and how to paint a landscape!!
Cheers, Cathy : )
