How to Paint Magical Night Moon Scene
Watch this time lapse to see how to paint this purple night moon reflection painting, from start to finish tutorial! This landscape is created with acrylic paint on canvas. Enjoy watching as the process of this colorful artwork unfolds, it has a wonderful bold folk art style!
I love night scenes, especially a full moon with reflections, there's a magical and mysterious vibe, like a dream. Do yourself a treat and take time to just go outside under the cover of night to take a look at the moon, she never fails to impress and the peace and calm of a still night is just so meditative!
This artwork was created using acrylic paint on a 12"x16" stretched canvas. Painting tip... when you're creating a painting that has a strong directional light source like a full moon, make sure the direction of the shadows makes sense.
Shadows always add some extra contrast and depth to make the painting more interesting. I usually start paintings with an orange base to make the colors I put on top brighter, plus and any gaps between strokes will show orange instead of white.
You'll notice that part way through, the painting seems to turn upside-down and then right-side up... often when I'm painting I'll do the initial color blocking, and then turn the canvas around so I can see the painting in a new way. When it's upside down I can logically think of my imaginary light source and how the shadows would be cast. Then I turn it right side up to finish off and give it a cohesive vibe. It seems odd I know, but the process has always works for me lol. You may have seen that the pine trees in the background disappeared part way through. Often I change my mind part way through the painting process. That's the beauty of paint... you can add things in or take things out at will to suit the design. I found I was liking the vertical lines of the other types of trees, they were a nice foil for the horizontal lines of the water.
