Colorful Harbour Painting Video

See How I Created this Colorful Fall Harbour Painting, Start to Finish!

Watch how to paint this landscape with acrylic paint. See these fall harbour colors come to life, in this time lapse art from start to finish! This video shows the art process of adding details and rich hues to depict this charming harbour scene and bright, colorful fall trees.

This piece has a cheerful folk art style! The imagery in this painting is from my imagination, based on years of observation (so no source material was referenced). You'll notice that partway through, the painting seems to turn upside-down... often when I'm painting, I'll turn the canvas around so I can see the piece in a new way. Then I turn it right side up to finish off. It seems odd I know, but the process has always worked for me lol. This painting was created using acrylic paint on stretched canvas. I start with an orange base as it makes the colors I put on top brighter, plus any gaps between strokes will show orange instead of white.

This is how I usually start all my acrylic paintings. Next, I draw out the composition in black outlines. Then I roughly block in the colors to see how they work together. Once I feel like I have a handle on the colours, I begin to add shading and highlights to bring the elements of the painting to life. I work the whole canvas at the same time since the changes I make in one part will affect other parts. Even though I have a good idea of where the painting is headed as I create it, you'll notice some changes do happen through the process as I add or subtract elements or change colors.

My palette for this piece is the same as many of my other paintings...(Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Orange, Red Oxide, Light Green Permanent, Brilliant Yellow Green, Dioxazine Purple, Phthalocyanine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber, White and Black) Please enjoy the journey as I create this painting, and I hope you learn something new about how to paint and capture stunning fall colours, and make art.

If you have any questions about my process, materials, or artwork, be sure to ask !! Cheers, Cathy : )

***P.S.S. My intention for sharing my painting in this video is not for you to copy it, but to give you an idea of how I create a painting so you can see the process. By watching others create art, you can gain insight into the process and hopefully be inspired to develop your own approach to making art, using colors and subjects that are personal to you.
