'Lake Moods' in progress...

Capturing the ever changing moods of water and sky...

I currently have artwork in galleries on both Lake Erie and Lake Huron. As a result, I've been spending time photographing and enjoying both these wonderful lakes views. I couldn't help but notice the variety of moods that each lake embodies... and just how quickly they change!

  • This is a view of the beach in Bayfield on lake Huron. It was a very sparkly day and just beautiful!!!

  • As I created this painting, I referred to the photos I took. I wanted to capture the sparkle of the day and really accentuate the interesting rays of sunlight.

  • This is the turnaround at the main beach here in Port Stanley. It was a moody day, which is reflected in the fact there's nobody at the beach. As an artist I was enamoured with the dense low hanging sky and smooth water.

  • I made as much as I could out of the sky in this painting. My photo was a point of departure, then I just riffed on the amazing lights and darks, to find the lines and vibes to accentuate the view.

  • As a painter of lakes, I love capturing the waves and also the land that extends around the lake as it disappears into the distance as a blue purple haze. It gives such depth to the expansive view.

  • I'm enjoying the sunny vibe on this one as I work away. This is the beach of Port Franks on Lake Huron. I've always loved this beach, it has the best colors!! I've had very good times here!!!

  • A view of the harbour here in Port and the rocks that edge the walkway, with some driftwood from stormier days.

  • Working on the view of the harbour. I changed the sky a bit and brought out more of the color in the scene.

Creating the mood....

In the days when I don't have a lot of space in my schedule for painting, I like to keep moving forward with the new art collections by creating some drawings.

The lovely thing about drawing is it keeps my creative wheels engaged, instead of just coasting along until there's time for the next painting. It also helps me see the 'bones' of a view without getting distracted by color.

Below is a step by step drawing of the beach here in Port, so you can see the process.

When the 'Lake Moods'collection is complete, they'll be available in my online studio shop for purchase, so folks from away will also have a chance to collect them too!

Be sure to sign up to my studio email list so you get early access to the collection as well as updates and works in progress. straight to your email inbox.

  • I captured a step by step of this painting so you could see how it goes from a sketch on an orange toned canvas, through the various layers of paint as I find my way.

  • We often get this amazing cloudy skies in Port as a weather sytem moves through. I was able to capture this one and all the drama with the light and dark.
