Watch this time lapse to see how I painted this bright happy coastal view!
This video shows the painting tutorial process from start to finish! The original 'Little Colorful Beach Huts' landscape is a 10x12 created using acrylic paint on stretched canvas.
This was a really fun painting that I sold a while back to a lovely collector. I start with an orange base as it makes the colors I put on top brighter, plus and any gaps between strokes will show orange instead of white. This is how I usually start all my acrylic paintings.
You may notice part way through I've turned it upside down so my hand come in from the top lol. I like turning paintings as work on them to give me a fresh perspective and to see the composition without worrying about the subject. When painting landscapes, keep in mind where the light source is, as it dictates what happens with the shadows from the huts. The shadows give a landscape scene a sense of depth and makes the elements within the composition feeling like they have volume. Shadows and highlights also create contrast which adds visual interest to the piece. I also tried to capture the feeling of a coastal beach with the color palette I chose. I wanted to feel colorful but not chaotic.
My palette for this piece is the same as many of my other paintings... (Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Orange, Red Oxide, Light Green Permanent, Brilliant Yellow Green, Dioxazine Purple, Phthalocyanine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber, White and Black)
This painting seems like a simple design, but as you can tell from the process there's a lot that goes into it to bring the view to life. If you have any questions about my process, materials or artwork be sure to ask CONTACT!
Please enjoy the journey as I create this painting, and I hope you learn something new about making art!!
Cheers, Cathy : )
