I remember my mom loved having them in her garden and we created a special lattice just so they could climb up the side of the house. These blooms were harder to paint than I thought they would be. The flower has a very distinctive shape that almost seems unreal, making it hard to convincingly render them... I almost gave up part way through but I'm glad I persevered. That's my process as an artist... I collect inspiration to create my art. I think in general people are collectors of things, we each have our own guilty pleasure with what we collect. Red is one of those colors that when you add white, and depending on the the underlying tone of that shade of red, things can get washed out. When photographing red it also gets flattened into just a blob of red.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAll that being said, and for the above reasons, I spent a lot longer on this painting that I expected, but in the end I feel like I was able to capture the forms of the geranium flower and leaves with a dynamic energy, I hope you think so too. This Autumn Journal series of paintings has been liberating in regards to my painting style. I'm just going with the flow by leaning into what I think is working while in the process, and experimenting with new ways of seeing and making marks.
